The Ashtalakshmi Stotram is a devotional stotram dedicated to the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi, known as Ashtalakshmi (8-Lakshmi). The Ashtalakshmi Stotra was composed and published in the early 1970s in Chennai by U.V. Srinivasa Varadachariyar, a theologian of the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
Typically, we view Goddess Lakshmi as the deity who bestows financial prosperity upon her devotees. However, wealth encompasses more than just money; it also includes blessings such as good fortune, health, and a thriving family.
Each form represents a unique aspect of wealth and prosperity, extending beyond material riches to include spiritual growth, courage, knowledge, and more. The hymn venerates these eight manifestations, seeking blessings for a prosperous and harmonious life.
Eight Forms of Goddess Lakshmi
- Adi Lakshmi (The Primeval Goddess): Adi Lakshmi, the primeval form of Goddess Lakshmi. She is the eternal source of the universe’s creation and sustenance. The verse seeks her blessings for maintaining peace, wisdom, and righteousness in life.

- Dhanya Lakshmi (Goddess of Harvest and Food): Dhanya Lakshmi is celebrated for nourishing all beings with food and resources. The hymn prays for her blessings to ensure a bountiful harvest, the abundance of food, and the well-being of all creatures.
- Gaja Lakshmi (Goddess of Power and Strength): Gaja Lakshmi, who symbolizes power, authority, and royalty. This form of the goddess is often depicted with elephants, signifying strength and sovereignty. The verse seeks her support in achieving victory, protection, and honor.
- Santana Lakshmi (Goddess of Progeny): Santana Lakshmi, the giver of progeny and the nurturer of future generations. The verse requests her blessings for healthy, virtuous children and the continuation of a prosperous lineage.
- Veera Lakshmi (Goddess of Courage and Valor): Veera Lakshmi represents courage, valor, and strength. This verse seeks her divine energy to overcome obstacles, face challenges with bravery, and remain steadfast in life’s battles.
- Vijaya Lakshmi (Goddess of Victory): The seventh verse celebrates Vijaya Lakshmi, the goddess of success and victory. It prays for her grace in achieving triumph over enemies, success in endeavors, and the elimination of all forms of negativity and defeat.
- Vidya Lakshmi (Goddess of Knowledge and Wisdom): Finally, the hymn concludes with a tribute to Vidya Lakshmi, the goddess of knowledge, arts, and education. This verse seeks her blessings for wisdom, learning, intellectual growth, and the pursuit of spiritual knowledge.
